Hi Sig; Re the impact of foreign affairs on US domestic politics.

The American people, like the people of Iraq and every other nation on the planet, are mostly stupid as posts. They're going to keep supporting this until it becomes unsupportable.

That may or may not be after the next election. It's probably pretty close one way or the other.

If Bush had wanted to make this a political war, he'd have tried to delay it, or at least lengthen it to closer to the elections. Politically, it reminds me of when Jimmy Carter put Reagan in office by bringing in Volcker in response to high inflation and then was stunned when the jobless rate went up because of higher interest rates.

Fortunately, people have fewer kids now than they did 50 years ago, so the anguish of losing them as cannon fodder is considerably higher. I doubt that we'll last as long as we did in Vietnam, or take nearly as many casualties.
