Dolinar,

Re: Turkey and "should go in next few years: secular state with a working democracy, leaning towards the west - remember US welcoming / forcing EU"

Turkey is actually heading in a different direction. Erdogan, the new Prime Minister, is the head of an Islamist party that was outlawed until recently. Turkey is becoming less secular. The Turkish Army is also acting remarkably independent of NATO at this time.

Should Turkey form an alliance with the EU, it will be most likely in the nature of an anti-Bush coalition. The curious alliance between Turkey and Israel is quite likely also in jeopardy at this time.
