Good article by Safire, but he left one juicy bit out - Belgium told Turkey that if Turkey invades Iraq, Belgium will block Turkey from entering the EU.

That, I think, all by itself, is enough to give Erdogan conniptions.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when he heard it.;^)

<Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that a Turkish presence in Iraq would help refugees and enhance security, strongly suggesting that the deployment would go ahead in the face of US and world disapproval.
But the move would "bring extra complications" to Turkey's EU membership bid, said a European Commission spokesman on Monday.

"Any action by a neighbour (of Iraq) that could destabilise the situation would be most unwelcome," Jean-Christophe Filori told reporters.

The EU opposed any Turkish military incursions into northern Iraq, he said, and hoped that Turkey clearly understood that.>

My comment: looks like Turkey is acting completely independently, not following either US or EU lead. Is unilateralism infectious?
