Iraq only has about 3,000 years of "oppressive regimes" to overcome for Bush's Messianic plan to become a success. Many of the people there have oppression burned into their genes. They know nothing else. Either you are on the side of the oppressor or are one of the oppressed. it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion: this pattern of human behavior transcends development of new religions from paganism to Christianity and to Islam.

"Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes". Climate and environmental opportunity has a lot to do with how human beings organize themselves into governments and interact at a basic one on one level. Iraq does have huge oil resources and it has a more diverse climate than many places in the region. That provides somewhat fertile ground for broad economic development needed to grow a middle class and foster things helpful to establishing democracy, such as educational institutions. But the problem of scarcity or resources (water among them), and scattered, century old divisions among the people, makes it difficult to grow democracy. The idea that you can march in and wave a gun around and miraculously democracy will happen is absurd. This will take a 20 year involvement and even then it's not a sure thing. But even though it's a gamble, it is now a gamble the U.S. President has committed us to, like it or not. We HAVE TO stick behind this commitment and follow it through. The war part of it is messy and only a means to an end. the only way good will come of the Bush mess is to spend billions "Nation Building" to force democracy on people ingrained with the attitudes of brutality.
