"Your qualifications to critique Franks' war plan are????

...I think the plan has been brilliant so far
"

I suppose I am about as qualified to criticise the war plan as you are qualified to praise it. ;-) However, I don't know how it might be useful to make the right for either of us to express opinion, be contingent upon any self proclaimed expertise.

I am just as capable, btw, of praising the efforts-just as you did. My criticism on a particular point reflected some strong frustration, and not ill will.

I agree with you that the key is Baghdad. Still, I would have done things a bit different. The US strength is obviously the open spaces where all their technology and air control give them absolute superiority. Now take the Blackhawk helicopter: it has a reach of about 120 miles for attack and transport after which it must return for fuel. Considering that special ops have been in Iraq for many months...a couple of strategic sites could have been picked and then established as fuel depots and copter bases with a small contingent of troops and armoured vehicles moved in immediately. The main divisions could then bypass towns as they are doing, while any retreating Iraqi tanks would be sandwiched in the open and vulnerable to the absolute American control of air AND ground space. And any rear action tanks leaving by-passed towns would shortly run into a terrible surprise. Iraqi ground movement from town to town would be effectively stopped.

It might have taken a couiple of days to establish and supply a couple of fuel bases and to move in equipment and men...but it would have insured that the strongest pieces would be able to act with immediacy to attack or defend or rescue.

Anyway, as I said...I was not really criticising. I ws just letting off steam.
