Ben, I'm surprised to hear he's still alive. I don't understand what he was saying about North Africa and the Romans. They attacked North Africa about 9 times over their 1600 years as a world power. The first 3 times were against the Carthaginians, and the first two were hardly an exercise to give the soldiers a job. Carthage was a huge threat and nearly conquered Rome under Hannibal.

He could be thinking of the 3rd war with Carthage, when it was just a shell and the Senator Cato started every speech with "Carthage must be destroyed."

When Justinian dismantled The Vandal Kingdom in Northern Africa during the mid-500s, that was also not busy work. The Vandals had sacked Rome and stole a bunch of Roman territories.

Maybe he's talking about Mussolini and Ethiopia, where his point would be well taken.

Ben, I've always thought it a hoot that former Senators Joe and Eugene hail from neighboring states and have the same last name. There opinions on things tend to be a wee bit different. <g>
