MSNBC AND NBC NEWS WASHINGTON, March 23 — Public support for President Bush has solidified in the early days of the war with Iraq, with two-thirds of Americans saying they approve of the way he is doing his job, according to a NBC poll published Sunday. Sixty-two percent of those questioned said the war was proceeding about as expected, while 25 percent said it was going better than expected. THE PRESIDENT’S approval rating of 67 percent in the poll of 516 adults conducted Sunday was up from 62 percent on March 17, two days before the first air strikes against Iraq. The percentage of Americans who disapprove of Bush’s job performance also declined by 5 percent, from 33 percent to 28 percent, over the period. The survey, conducted Sunday by the Hart/Teeter polling firm, also indicated that Americans believe they were well prepared by the administration for what to expect once the fighting began. Sixty-two percent of those questioned said the war was proceeding about as expected, while 25 percent said it was going better than expected. Only 10 percent said it was going worse than expected, though the poll was conducted just as reports about the fiercest day of fighting in Iraq were just beginning to reach viewers in the United States. Fifty-four percent of respondents also said that resistance from Iraq’s military force was “about as expected,” while 31 percent said it was not as tough as expected and 10 percent said it was tougher than expected. A majority of those questioned said they believe that U.S. forces will discover weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, with 62 percent saying such an outcome is very likely and 16 percent deeming it somewhat likely. Seven percent said it was not that likely. Americans were uncertain about how long the conflict may last. Nearly a quarter — 24 percent — of respondents said they expected the war to last between two weeks and a month. Three percent said it would be over in less than a week, while 13 percent said they expected it to last more than six months. The margin of error for the poll of 516 Americans was plus or minus 4 percent.msnbc.com Sorry 'bout that....
