The borders that Sharon is drawing today, under the cover provided by Iraq2, puts off that day, by more decades. The Palestinians are not going to accept 4 separated tiny cantons as a "State", not in 10 years, not in 50 years from now

Jacob, I simply don't believe that Sharon is drawing these so-call tiny canton borders, and won't until I see it in a reliable Israeli source. PLO spokesmen utter the truth only when it is politically convenient, not otherwise. They've been yelling about bantustans since nine months after Taba, and having read all sides carefully, I'm convinced that what they are yelling about had nothing to do with the offers actually under negotiation at Camp David and Taba. This effort at PR damage control was aided by the fact that no definite maps seemed to be set down at Camp David by either side, long and painful experience having shown that Arafat could not be trusted with a written offer.

But to extend it to totally enclose and subdivide Arab areas, this is not "defense"

Jacob, I don't think you, I, the euros, America, or the UN is going to decide what the boundaries are. The Israelis and the Pals are. And the Pals are never going to get the deal now they could have got. Plus, the deal will not be cut until Israel, with our help, has settled the hash of Hamas. When the Sirians and the Iranians have had an "Attitude Adjustment," you may see a deal struck.
