I've decided disturbing signs are a part of any large scale demonstration in this country regardless of left or right, up or down. There are simply disturbed folk out there who parade their disturbance. Their presence doesn't comment about the aims of the demonstration, though opponents often try to use them to do so.

Since I'm very strongly pro choice, my favorites are signs at pro life demonstrations. But they happen to all sides.

A young man whom I know well says that some of the anti-war demonstrators last Saturday in Manhattan carried several directly anti-Semitic signs.

In France, in the housing projects there has been a loosening of tongues, and really virulent anti-Semite discourse that hasn't been seen in the country in a long time is becoming common. It doesn't really matter that this is an uneducated backwash that one finds in such areas, it's taking place. It doesn't matter how idiotic this is (people in France, whether they're Muslims or Jews don't have F-all to do with the stupid territorial dispute in Israel, let alone what America does in Iraq), it just shows again what is now bubbling up to the surface.
