While I wouldn't be surprised if the US had "long-term basing rights" there as Bill said, I don't think that is because it is necessary to defend Iraq against neighboring "opportunists." It is the potential for US mobilization in its defense, not actual forces present at any given time, that deters opportunists.

That said, who might be those opportunists? Iran? Turkey? Saudi? Why?

The US is trying to get the Iraq armed forces to capitulate, switch sides and save their own jobs. That's why we haven't bombed the Defense Ministry in Baghdad, IMO.

I think the US will have a military presence in Iraq for the rest of all our lifetimes, meaning 100 year leases or somesuch.
