For instance, back in 1990, Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) had a $5 billion market cap. It had trailing sales of $1.5 billion.

By comparison EBay's (EBAY: news, chart, profile) market cap is now $27 billion, or about 5.5 times what Microsoft was worth in 1990.

Microsoft traded at 3.3 times trailing sales back then, according to Hickey. EBay now trades at 22.5 times trailing sales of $1.2 billion.

Microsoft's price-to-earnings multiple averaged 19 times trailing earnings in 1990. Even at Monday's closing price of $87.55, EBay had a price-to-trailing earnings multiple of 100
