That is not what I meant. We all have our prejudices, myself included. The trick is to try to be at least aware of them so that when we are evaluating a situation we can guard against our own short comings. Many times everyday I am forced to take positions that don't make me "feel" as good as the contrary. This is because they are against my own prejudices. But in the end, trying to make an effort to see it from the other side's perspective has served me more than any feel-good position I would take.

> You won't ever catch me saying that westerners understand middle easterners; nor the other way around.

Exactly! And yet so many people are so sure of what they should do with the middle east. And I am not talking about this thread. Here we are just talking and we are all learning. But there are those in the decision making positions who really don't have a feel for nations they are trying to deal with. Otherwise we (US) would not be having as hard of a time dealing with them.

> Your example of Iran reads well. I wonder though, currently, aren't they experiencing their own inner turmoil ?

Their internal termoils are of their own doing and are best resolved by themselves. This is not any different than saying that US is in termoil because of pro-war and anti-war groups (NeoCons and ?) or Christian Right and Seculars, etc. etc. It is not the kind of conflict that exists between say Kurds and Turks.
