In other words, if Irael's solution is to have a buffer zone, then that buffer zone should reside on Israels land.

It is not my intent to defend Israels expansionism. I think the problem is as close to being unsolvable as any I've seen. Someone called in to c-span this morning when friedman was on, suggesting they give the Palestinians a nice piece of ground in western Iraq. If only it were that simple...

It would be your obligation to plant your petunias far enough back so they don't get hurt. In this case, Israel doesn't have the right to go on some one else's land, in another country, to knock down his house, to protect your property. Israel should move its houses back out of the way, so there is a buffer, and go through the courts to get redress, if the terrorist used his house to attack Israel. In other words, if Irael's solution is to have a buffer zone, then that buffer zone should reside on Israels land.

There are couple of issues mixed in here. The Israelis clearly feel they own the occupied territories in part because they know no one can contest their position. That's annoying but that's the position Israel has taken for years now, claiming they were forced into it by the 7 day war. And its the reason relations between Israel and Palestine are at a low point.

However, what I find over the top is that Sharon is building a wall around all of Palestine......I think in an effort to mimic the Great Wall of China. At first it was to be just a wall between Palestine and Israel.....presumably to keep the Palestinians out of Israel. Now however, there is talk that he wants to encircle the entire West Bank and of course, Gaza. Obviously, the situation has reach the insanity level.

Unfortunately, in Israel's case, once the buffer zone is on their land, you end up with an Israel that is six miles wide at its center and more or less indefensible.

It's time we sent troops in there to sort this all out instead of letting the Israelis take care of it.
