RESEARCH ALERT-Goldman says HP quarter will be close

NEW YORK, March 25 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs said on Tuesday that while No. 1 personal computer and printer company Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) may meet its targets for the current quarter, it will be close because of the tough economic environment.

"HP is still in a position to make the April quarter, although outside forces will undoubtedly bring it right down to the wire," Goldman Sachs analyst Laura Conigliaro said in a research note.

HP shares were off 3.6 percent, or 60 cents, at $15.95 in morning New York Stock Exchange trading.

Conigliaro, who rates the stock as "in-line," said in the research note that she expects favorable exchange rates to help results, as should strong sales of printer supplies.

She expects the company to bring in $17.8 billion in revenue and earnings of 27 cents per share for the second fiscal quarter ending April 30. Analysts on average expect revenue of $17.9 billion and earnings of 27 cents per share, according to Thomson First Call.
