since everyone and their dogs are allowed membership free,
Is THAT what has happened to this place?

I was wondering why the couldn't keep the standard up to my level or better. :-)

Actually, it works fine, but if a free member tries to post to a non-free area (we prefer to confine free members to talking about stocks for the most part and let the payers run a little more amok), it should display a screen saying why it doesn't allow a post there. Might not have always been true.

We've also since added a "Free Zone" for things like Users Groups, so the freebie posting options have opened up quite a bit.

Personally, I like the new SI interface, although I like it better on my laptop (which is displaying less of the weird brownish color than my desktop does), and at least in my experience (I use very high resolutions and full-screen), the message navigation buttons stay put, which is a claim I can't brag about. It's a pet peeve of mine I have yet to really fix.

Good and bad in everything. Yes, the "other site" is more aggressive about enforcing even more stringent rules about civil conduct. I won't object to the label "censorship", though I prefer to think of it as "keep it clean and above the belt and we *mean* it".

I can cuss someone out a lot more harshly here than there, and if I really want to flame them, well, there's always RB.

Jorj, regarding SI's apparent slowness or unresponsiveness to problems that're raised, I hate to make excuses for a company that is, at the end of the day, a competitor, but I can relate to their side. I've got a Wish List a mile long submitted by members and, despite my holding myself out to be a responsive and sometimes clever code-jockey, I'm so friggin' swamped with programming and non-programming duties alike that there are *simple* things that've been on the list for months that I still haven't gotten to.

Oh, and why ain't I programming now instead of messaging here? I moved operations into a real office a few months ago and have intentionally seen to it that I simply can't do any programming from home.

After about 15 years of either self-employment, or a job I could do from home, it's really nice to finally have "life" and "work" separated. <Ahhhh!>

After seeing what SI has fallen to since everyone and their dogs are allowed membership free,

since when did SI memberships become free?
Are you sure about that?
I know they've done a bunch of promo stuff in the past that brought on a lot of new members
But it strikes me as very odd if memberships are free to the general public now.
