I think what you said way back then is just as valid today.

Also, the current color scheme is garish, and difficult to read with bifocals.

I have posted my views on navigation buttons many times.
They shouldn't be spread out over the active area, it should require the least amount of movement to click on any given button.

You don't need me to tell you how to do it. Just go back and look at the original design. What has been done now is akin to putting the turn indicator control in the back seat, the brake in the passenger compartment and the driver in trunk.
