U.S.: Up to 500 Iraqis die in battle

NBC, MSNBC AND NEWS SERVICES

March 26 — Despite a fierce sandstorm that stalled the progress of U.S. troops who had moved to within 50 miles of Baghdad, Pentagon officials said between 150 and 500 Iraqi troops were killed Tuesday after attacking American forces near the city of Najaf. Elsewhere, a second column of American troops resumed its advance northward after overcoming stubborn resistance in the southern city of Nasiriyah and British troops prepared to move into Basra, where some of the city’s mostly Shiite Muslim citizens were said to be rising up against the ruling Baath Party and Iraqi militiamen loyal to Saddam Hussein.
