The third point is the one that got my attention, as well.

Yesterday I posted something, can't remember the source, that the Iraqi opposition is waiting for Basra and Mosul to fall before they announce themselves as the new government of Iraq. I agree that it would be hubristic to do it until significant progress has been made.

I'd love to know what the diplomatic maneuverings were after Bush 41 encouraged the Shi'ias to rise up. He obviously intended to help, but someone got to him and talked him out of it. You gotta watch those State Department weasels...
