Therefore we are the ones who have the responsibility to cover its shortcomings.

As always, we have responsibility, nobody else.

Best we move on.

The prime doctrine of US policy has been that "American foreign policy always favors stability over democracy".

Is there an economically developed country on the planet that doesn't favor "stability over democracy" ? If not simply the classic "Maybe it'll go away" ?

I doubt it in practice. And given that on the European continent it has been France brandishing the loudest megaphone against this ill considered (in my opinion) adventure of ours...

The foreign policy of all these donneurs de leçons morales has been above all guided by the desire to avoid taking on any risk whatsoever for themselves, economically or otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. Might as well let America take the hit, and profit fully from the occasion by self righteously denouncing US imperialism at the same time.
