They want Israel's destruction and believe that they have to back the US off in order to get it. Look at the number of anti-semites who have come out of the woodwork to oppose the war in Iraq.

Somewhat true. But....... the Palestinians are living in crushing poverty, especially those in Gaza.

True.. except for Arafat and his cronies.. They are doing pretty well for themselves.

Before the Intafada, many Gaza Palestinians had good jobs in Israel. In fact, before the Intafada, the Palestinians, as a whole, had a better standard of living than their counterparts in other Arab nations.

Again.. true.. but it depends on perception. Foreign Latinos living in the US have a better life than most of their counterparts back home. But they hardly have it as good as most Americans.

Thus, the Palestinians are essentially the "wetbacks" of Israel, as well as much of the middle east. And they are treated with the same level of disdain there, and in most Arab countries, as Latinos have received here..

The question: Do the terrorist groups want peace with Israel, or Israel's extermination?

I think we all know the answer to that one. The question is what viable alternative is being offered to Palestinians which will replace the current support networks provided by the terrorist groups...

Don't make the mistake, Robert, of believing there terrorist groups are just a bunch of gunmen running around. They are essentially mini-governments... Mafias running entire neighborhoods and towns, commanding social resources normally provided by Arafat, who's government has broken down at the local level. Arafat is walking a line between commanding these groups when their interests coincide, and fearing them when they attempt to usurp his power, as his credibiity as a viable leaders diminishes.

And in the midst of all this, there has to be a viable alternative,, A government which is able to offer sufficient hope that Palestinians will rely upon it to make the disparate groups compromise, as well as to provide for them.

And this is why, I believe, the US has demanded that a pseudo elected moderate government be created. Because we'll be damned if we're going to give Arafat money to dole out on social services. And the Israel's will be damned if they're going to permit Hamas or the other terrorist groups possess a major role in any Palestinian state.

Bottom line.. the terrorist organizations must be neutralized, politically, economically, and militarily..

And that can only happen when an entity exists which can replace all of those roles for the Palestinian people.
