OPERATION: IRAQI FREEDOM Saddam reveals 'true colors' Regime said hiding Scuds in trucks, rigging bridges to blow Posted: March 26, 2003 12:20 p.m. Eastern © 2003 WorldNetDaily.com After a week of continuous pounding by coalition forces, Saddam's "true colors," as one U.S. general puts it, are starting to show, as reports of atrocities on the part of the Iraqi regime mount. Israeli television Channel 1 reports Iraq is playing a shell game with coalition forces, hiding missile launchers and Scud missiles on specially constructed trucks that move around the country and hide beneath bridges to escape detection by satellite and air surveillance. Iraq has so far launched 10 missiles toward Kuwait since the start of the conflict, one of which was reported to be a Scud. Officials report all the missiles that pose a threat were successfully shot down by U.S. Patriot batteries, and several of the missiles were weapons banned by the United Nations. Citing Israeli officials, Channel 1 said the Russian-manufactured launchers inside the trucks are fully capable of launching Scud missiles. As a result, coalition forces have been bombing bridges and trucks intensively in the western part of Iraq. Commanders came under fire from reporters at a press briefing in Doha, Qatar, this morning for blowing up a bridge. "We only target things of military significance," responded Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks. His message to reporters: Things are not what they seem. To demonstrate the dirty-tricks tactics observed on the part of the Iraqis, Brooks showed images of an Iraqi military vehicle hidden under a bridge, a military base near a mosque and school, and communications equipment positioned in ancient ruins marked as an historical site. He said there were reports that Iraqis were rigging bridges for demolition. Brooks also again sounded the alarm over the threat of chemical weapons being used on U.S. and British troops, following yesterday's discovery of 3,000 chemical suits at a hospital in central Iraq that had been used as an Iraqi base. Marines also confiscated gas masks and nerve-gas antidote injectors in the hospital near Nassiriya in southern Iraq. "What we found at the hospital reinforces our concern," he said and then added, "We are well-prepared to deal with the potential use of chemical weapons." The New York Times reports the members of the Army's 507th maintenance company, who were ambushed by irregular Iraqi forces and shown piled in a makeshift morgue on Iraqi and Arab satellite television, were executed as they tried to surrender – apparently in front of townspeople. U.S. officials have not confirmed the report. One defense official told Reuters News Agency the U.S. military had received "mixed reports" about the incident. Brooks said Iraqi civilians have been marched out on the battlefield in front of Iraqi troops, and said he "was not surprised" by the report of an Iraqi fighter found dead with explosives strapped to him and wearing a U.S. uniform. "The practices that have been conducted by these paramilitaries and by these others who are out there – sometimes in uniform, sometimes not in uniform – are more akin to the behavior of global terrorists than they are to a nation," he said. "The world is getting a clearer view of the Iraqi regime and the evil at its heart," President Bush told troops assembled this morning for a rally at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. "In the ranks of that regime are men whose idea of courage is to brutalize unarmed prisoners. They wage attacks while posing as civilians. They use real civilians as human shields. They pretend to surrender, then fire upon those who show them mercy. This band of war criminals has been put on notice, the day of Iraq's liberation will also be a day of justice."
