Of course, I'm no expert on Islam so when we come down to the "nitty-gritty" of Muslim feelings I have little to contribute. However, it seems a relatively easy matter for any Muslim cleric or fundamentalist leader to issue a fatwa and call a jihad, so whether all of Islam will now rise up against the US is another matter entirely. That all Muslims are very unhappy about the Israeli/Palestinian polemic goes without saying --- but what have they actually been prepared to do about it? Same thing goes for the new Iraqi war. This time, however, it's important to remember that Saddam is not a religious Muslim, in fact, he is the sworn enemy of the Muslim fundamentalists --- and these are the ones who make the jihad (holy war). The position of the religious Shiite Muslims in Iraq is interesting --- and revealing. These are particularly in the south, including Basra, and it was hoped by the US/UK that they would rise up in revolt against Saddam and join the coalition forces. However, as this article shows, this is not to be. As much as they dislike Saddam, so they dislike the US, particularly because they consider the US double-crossed them in 1991. Also, because they know the US does not like Iran, especially the fundamentalist leadership, and has, in fact, stated that it intends to remove it. And as we know, the Iranians are mainly Shiites and have a very close relationship to the Iraqi shiites.story.news.yahoo.com >>>TEHRAN (AFP) - Iraq's Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim opposition has stepped up its anti-war and anti-American stance since the start of the conflict but is still counting on US military muscle to oust Saddam Hussein. "We have said from the outset that this war does not help the Iraqi people," Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim told a news conference Tuesday, demanding US and British troops leave "as soon as possible" after the fall of the Iraqi president. The leader of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) was defiant in tone, warning the Americans that "Iraqis will resist by all means available, including force of arms, if these foreign forces turn into occupiers." <<< So as you see, the religious Muslims have an agenda of their own. They will let Saddam's boys and the US slug it out until Saddam is defeated and the US exhausted --- and then they will decide what to do. In fact, that is when the war against religious Islam can/will begin. And, if Mr Perle and Mr Wolfowitz and the other chicken-hawks have their way --- it will. Being Israeli Likud supporters, they have their own reasons for a "jihad" against all of Islam and this the US is expected to conduct on their behalf.
