it looks like it is just foolish military redeployment:

04:36 PM | Two major mistakes
On MSNBC, they just had Former General Ken Allard with Lester Holt. He believes the Column down in Basra is just a screw up by the local commander, and the Convoy from Baghdad is infantrymen in trucks moving to reinforce the Al Medina line. "When We go up against leg infantry, Iraq comes up second best everytime" He was heard saying.

04:36 PM | WARPLANES ATTACK CONVOY
British warplanes are attacking a large column of Iraqi troops heading out of Basra as 5,000 Republican Guards are reported to be heading for a possible showdown with US Marines.

'Suicide'
Major Green added: "The inexplicable thing is why they have decided to move so much armour before darkness. To move tanks around in daylight is suicide."

04:30 PM | "Baghdad Convoy" Update
Col. Ken Allard (USA, Ret.) is opining on MSNBC that the movement of the Republican Guard units around Baghdad is merely a redeployment of the forces to new positions, intended to be hidden from the eyes of the Allies under the cover of the sandstorm. (Editorial note: This actually makes some sense, as they know that we have their current positions marked for repeated air and artillery strikes.)
