Your right. I used some unfortunate language when I said the U.S.'s position in the world would be enhanced. This war is engendering strong resentments among many nations.

What the U.S. will gain is even more of a stranglehold on the strategic middle east. Your right about diminishing returns - world domination is a concept that has never worked that well for those nations who persue it.

fully agree on diminishing returns of US MidEast presence
our basing in Iraq is a parallel to Soviets basing in Afghany
it will serve as a stationary target for Arab bombings of all kinds
e.g. artillery, suiciders, rockets, grenades
it will serve as proof to Islamics that the USA is a colonialist nation seeking to grab their oil
it will absolutely and totally galvanize Arab opinion against the USA
and worse, it will galvanize Europe's position against the USA
a new Russian-French-German axis is forming
it will soon center on oil and energy supplies

humanitarian efforts will not matter
they do not override the deaths that preceded our invasion

we think we can control perceptions and thought processes
we cannot
we think we can control acceptance of truth
we cannot

images of Baghdad crumbled marketplace now work against us
even if it was an Iraqi missile
the truth does not matter
only perceptions do
will Baghdad citizens believe Saddam's people killed them?
not a chance

the backroom Senate efforts to reveal forgery of UN documents on Iraqi WMD dont matter
after the war begins, only deaths matter
after a while, nobody will remember or care why we entered their country and began a war

what disturbs me just as much is the pervasive sentiment across the USA
that we are entitled to get that oil, because WE NEED IT

images of dead children bearing rifles are next
images of dead women killed as human shields will be next
except the men using them as shields will not be in the photos

this war is about four things:
1. securing oil before the next Arab oil boycott
2. securing airbases before the Prince Sultan Airfield in Saudi is shut down to US Forces
3. stemming the flow of Petro-Dollars into Euros and EuroBonds
4. finding and removing Weapons of Mass Destruction

I expect a complete mess shattering all expectations when we lay siege to Baghdad
it will not fall, not now, not next month, not next year
the only way it will fall is if USA drops a nuclear bomb on it
this will turn into Stalingrad Part Deux
except the whole world is watching

lastly, how long before we see LIVE from EMBEDDED REPORTERS, telecasts of a reporter getting his head blown off ???
I say one week
