Syrian religious leader urges suicide attacks
Thursday, March 27, 2003. 10:45pm (AEDT)

Syria's top religious leader has called for suicide bombings against the United States and its allies in the war against Iraq.

The call came as Syrian President Bashar Assad warned that he believes his country may be next in line for a US invasion.

In a message faxed to news agencies, Syrian grand mufti Sheikh Ahmad Keftaro called on Muslims to use all means possible to thwart the aggression in Iraq, including what he called "martyr operations" against the belligerent invaders.

He said resistance was an obligation for all Muslims starting with the invaders of Iraq.

Meanwhile President Assad has told the Lebanese newspaper As Safir that he believes Syria may be next on the US agenda to redraw the map of the Middle East.

He said Syria would not wait to become the next target.

He called on other Arab nations to oppose the coalition forces.
