tejek,

re:Sharon is evil and needs to be sacked but the Israelis cling to him like rats to a sinking ship. And the only way he gets away with this shit is because he has the US's support. No good can come from our continued support of this piglet.

You're going to bust a vein. <g>

He's evil to those that would harm his citizens - sort of his job. I can't say too many positive things about Arafat either - but if they don't get on with the new PM and we begin to push the Israelis to bury the hatchet - they will surely use one on each other.

Bush and Blair have been making statements regarding Israel and a new position they seem to be taking - should be interesting to read the plan they intend to unveil - once Arafat is neutralized.

Ted,

The suicide bombers deeply offend us.....understandably........their behavior is over the top. Unfortunately, our upset stops there.

Actually, these acts provide the cover for the Jewish settlers in West Bank.

Sharon is evil and needs to be sacked but the Israelis cling to him like rats to a sinking ship. And the only way he gets away with this shit is because he has the US's support. No good can come from our continued support of this piglet.

I am not sure what your are trying to achieve by calling Israelis rats. The bottom line is that Arafat and the suicide bombers basically elected Sharon, as they saw a clear failure of Barak's approach (which ranged from fair dealing to appeasement).

Joe

No, Sharon is in power because the Israeli Left did all it could to try to bring peace over the course of ten years and no matter what they offered, it was not enough for the Palestinians. Most Israelis tried very hard to believe peace could come from the Oslo accords, and they were extremely let down, and now security comes first, before negotiations. They're comfortable with a security-minded individual like Sharon in power.

>If you were to look deeper, you will find there are reasons for a people to become so desperate that they blow themselves up, and its not because of Allah and the 7 virgins that everyone jokes about.

There are plenty of countries with poorer populations than the Palestinians, and the people don't blow themselves up. Iraq is sending suicide bombers at us. Al-Qaida sends middle-class suicide bombers. Many of the Palestinian bombers are university-educated students. There's a religious sanction for it.

The major reason the Israelis have to keep the Palestinians on lockdown the way they do is because the Palestinians use tactics that are very, very underhanded, such as dressing up at Hassidic Jews, hiding bombs in the guise of a pregnant woman, transporting militants and weapons in ambulances, using children as human shields, etc... Groups like Amnesty International deny that these things happen, but we're seeing seeing occurrences like these among the Iraqis right now, and they're fairly widespread throughout the Arab world.
