Seems to me that uh... "controversial" posters are attracted to the geopolitical threads on SI much like annoying insects are attracted to bright lights at night. Hence, one of the more obvious reasons that I avoid those threads. Much too easy to be dragged down to the personality level of the lowest common denominator...
