Because the wicked are to be cast into the lake of fire. Which is the second death. Because of their works. Not because of sin. Gehenna isn't symbolic of anything. It is quite literal. But judgment does not occur when a person dies. It occurs much later, and all at once. All unbelievers will stand at the end of the Millennium, at the Great White Throne Judgment. And even the GWT does not judge them for SIN - it judges them for their works. (Read it again Brian) All sin has been paid for by Christ on the cross. No sinner will ever have to be punished for their sins. They will face judgement for their works, and their wrongs will be righted, and their lives justified.
