We are now in this war & American credibility demands that we win. I'm not buying this "battered wife" syndrome of the Iraqis.

Nadine, I do feel duped. It is not the Baath resistance that troubles me. It is the reaction of ordinary Iraqis in the south. Rumsfeld suffered from Afghan afterglow. He was brilliant in Afghanistan-combining local forces & special ops. Why did he reject the locals in Iraq while at the same time sending in lighter forces than the military establishment wanted?

He is a patriot & I believe he bought his own rhetoric. He was not trying to dupe anyone. BUT, that does not make him free from culpability. When Turkey rejected our troops, we started the war without the 4th cavalry. The "fighting 4th" is our most advanced armored unit. Why did he not wait to reposition them in the conflict?

"This isn't Somalia, but any defense secretary unwilling to listen to the advice of his uniformed subordinates assumes a terrible responsibility."

I just love how he denies that we are in a Somalia situation but brings it into his report.. If he didn't think this was a Somalia , shouldn't he not have introduced it into the column? Or is it another way to flame to touch up his report?
He quotes Ralph Peters from Post"the civilian leadership in the Pentagon let our troops down".
Let's face it.. Rumsfeld is not popular with the Pentagon.. I doubt you will get favorable comments from them when they have a chance now to get back at him through undocumented sources..
