Remind me to explain to you sometimes how the Germans triggered the Great Depression, but the French turned a recession into the Great Depression. It all boiled down to a concept economists now call "Beggar Thy Neighbor." The French really stuck it to the Germans, the Brits, and the Americans, and our allies,and took us all down the toilet together, including the French. Way too complicated to boil down quickly but the phrase "beggar thy neighbor" is pretty descriptive. A round robin of neighbor-beggaring pretty much screwed everyone.
