Did Nader actually carry any states? Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think so. So, no, that couldn't have happened.

Electoral College votes are also typically cast one vote for the entire state, although it is possible for an individual Elector to vote "rogue." Given the way the Electors are selected in each state (by their own political parties), unlikely, but it has happened a few times, never in any event that mattered.

Yes, it's arcane, but that's the way it is.

Presidential elections really revolve around the votes of the states, not the populace. Set up that way to protect the smaller states from the larger states.
