DURHAM, N.C. -(Dow Jones)- Cree Inc. (stock up 16.58% today)signed an agreement for Sumitomo Corp. to purchase about $100 million of light emitting diode products through Cree's fiscal year ending June 2004.
In a press release Tuesday, Cree said the new agreement reflects expected demand for the second year of the existing three-year distribution agreement with Sumitomo and insures a continued local supply of Cree's LED chips for the Japanese market.

Cree, which had fiscal 2002 revenue of $155.4 million, and Sumitomo expect the purchases to cover Cree's full line of LED products.

"This new agreement is greater than four times last year's commitment from Sumitomo and is indicative of the growth we have experienced in Japan," noted Chuck Swoboda, Cree's president and chief executive.

In April 2002, Cree unveiled plans to open an office in Tokyo and announced an agreement with Sumitomo as a strategic partner. Sumitomo agreed to purchase about $24 million of Cree's LED products over a 15-month period ending June 2003.
