There are different types of SAM's - not all are the small shoulder-fired Stinger or Strela type used against low-flying aircraft. Most SAM's designed for high-altitude aircraft (which is what we're using) have fragmentation warheads designed to explode whenever they get within a certain distance of their target and send out a wide pattern of fragmention particles. Here's a link on Russian SAM missiles: aeronautics.ru I don't know exactly what SAM's Iraq has but I do know they are Russian. SA-1 GUILD (R-113, S-25, V-300 Berkut) weight 3,500kg warhead 250kg HE fragmentation length 12m diameter 71cm fin span tail span speed max range/max altitude 32-40km That one sounds like it would make a nice big explosion.

what is this about collateral damage? we're such a bunch of hand-wringers that we can't even fess up about an errant missile... i mean yes it was ours and damnitt... that's war... but to hemm and haw and say, 'oh we think it was an iraqi sam'... too weird... i mean we're trying to establish an empire yet we act like a bunch of limp-wristed sissies... oh you troops can't kill civilians... be extra special careful out there... oh that was an iraqi sam... oh we're liberating them from saddam... this is why i see the whole thing doomed to failure from the start... our politicians don't have the sangfroid... they're too duplicitous and not big enough badasses... they have all of this 'newspeak' excess baggage with their 'democracy' and 'freedom' garbage constantly spewing forth... hystorically, it was about booty and not democracy or whatnot... we need to get back to it being about booty... all of this civilization pretend crap is just that... crap...
