My Spiritual Teacher, Adi Da talks of the same idea in: "You become what you meditate upon (or give your attention to) It's true of individuals and also groups and countries. Seen in this way, the current UK/US "excursion" in Iraq is just the (relatively) inevitable flowering of what those countries have given their attention to (internationally) in the past; perhaps a little more nakedly exposed than previously, yes, so it becomes a Colonialism 1.01 course for the masses of the world and a Colonialism 99.99 course for those in the UK and USA. Relative to NO FREEDOM, Adi Da would agree with you relative to those under the spell of the ego (or self-contraction) but he says that the ego can be transcended by surrender into the Divine that lives and breathes and IS every one and every thing.
