I think it is safe to say, then, that neither side is wholly honest in its reporting.

Which may have resulted in a basement strewn with dozens of bodies with bullet holes in their heads that won't be discovered until later. Who knows. But it is a fact, that the locals hate the Iraqi soldiers, so it's not a stretch that some might engage in action against them.
