"Consider the possibility that Iraqis might not think of their people fighting against the US/UK invasion forces as "Saddam-controlled neighborhood keepers of the peace" (whatever that means)."

I'm considering it, but, sorry correct if I'm wrong, I've read in the western press that the shiites hate Iraqi soldiers and they view them as their oppressors. Are you saying that is not true?

The more they resist, the more will be killed.
They should all surrender as soon as possible.

All anti-war protestors should be preaching full surrender at this point.

"then how come Basra is still resisting?"

I don't know, but I saw BBC footage last night of fleeing (shiite) Iraqi civilians being fired upon by Saddam's troops outside Basra to prevent their escape. Didn't you say the Arab media was reporting that sort of thing wasn't happening? I have a dead uncle who was made to dig a ditch long ago and when he was finished he was asked if he wanted to join the army or be shot. He decided to join. I see the civilians of Basra in the same situation, they have little choice, so far, to do anything but feign support for Saddam's regime.

"We want to say that Saddam Hussein's rule is totally wrong. What kind of regime takes small kids and puts them in the army? God doesn't accept this — taking people by force and giving them guns and forcing them to fight. It's all because of Saddam Hussein. We don't want him."

They were still under the impression that we were soldiers. When we explained that we were journalists, they were stunned. Finally they gave us their home telephone number in Diyala and asked us to telephone their parents to tell them that their sons are alive. Then they changed their mind and asked us not to call. Their father had asked them to fight bravely. They didn't want to disappoint him.

Children forced to fight reported in the west, is it propaganda? Absent from Arab media reporting, propaganda by ommission?
