zonder--If misleading Iraq in 1990 into thinking that we had no interest in its dispute with Kuwait was intentional, then why wouldn't Bush have been delighted to finish off Saddam right then and there? If allowing a war to start was intentional, then Bush would have gone against all the advice he was getting from both the State Department and the DOD. I grant you that he knew what he was doing, but it doesn't follow that he wanted a war.

The only conclusion I can draw is that he didn't understand what the inevitable consequences would be and was willing to place petty politics above professionalism in reaching his decision. On that score, like father, like son.
