Funnily some of the popularity USA has had in the region is that USA "helped" England withdraw, that is, USA kind of took over the old British Colonies, protectorates,etc.. One good example is Mossadegh, elected, popular Iranian prime-minister, "man of the year" of Times in 1951-3?? but when it came to nationalizing the oil-resources british secrete service messed up some assassination and riot, revolt attempts, CIA took over and got rid of him. Then folllowed the US puppet Shah, and Khomeini is also history. (as the IRan-Iraq war)
