I've also still not given up hope that someone close to SH ends this for everyone peacefully.

JB, a nice thought, and apparently we've tried to help it on, with cash prizes and everything. But Saddam seems as ruthless and cunning as his hero Stalin, and has insured that everyone on his side is totally identified with him and his policies, from top Baath party officials to the Saddam Feyadeen riffraff. Still, it's a card in the deck, and the chances increase as we advance militarily.

I don't doubt that most Iraqis hate Saddam, but the ones that don't have the guns. Any humanitarian tragedy is a setback for us, and Saddam's people are vicious enough to exploit that, in the cities especially.

The death of 50 civilians in a bombing raid, though sad, is not a great tragedy in an operation of this scope. But seeing over a million people in Basra living on the edge of terror has me wringing my hands a bit.
