Numerous articles have shown that he thought warfare had changed toward lighter mobile forces. He has been butting heads with the military establishment & has not respected the views of "traditional" Generals.

Yes, Rumsfeld has been trying to induce change at the Pentagon. Change creates resentment, and the chief resenters leak their resentments to the WaPo at moments of opportunity.

So much I can say for sure, but not being a military expert, I cannot give an educated opinion as to the merits of Rumsfeld's case.

I do know that in war, the main different between an arrogant know-it-all and a visionary is how it all comes out on the battlefield, which is usually determined by far too many variables for any one man to grasp, let alone control.
