DOHA, Qatar (CNN) -- Five U.S. soldiers with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division were killed Saturday morning when suicide bombers attacked a military checkpoint in the central Iraqi town of Najaf, U.S. military sources said.

"A vehicle with two people in the vehicle came to a checkpoint. The people were dressed in civilian clothes and the car exploded," said Col. Frank Thorp, a U.S. Central Command spokesman. "We do have five casualties."
