I do have a different opinion. To start, I think the military was pissed off they got bombed and are frustrated at not having clearly defined national targets to go after that were responsible. they decided that Saddam was bad enough and the easiest target to go after since almost everyone recognizes him to be a ruthless dictator. The sad fact is that the creators of the "weapons of mass destruction" of 9/11 were Boeing and American Airlines, not Saddam. If any country was responsible, it's our "ally", Saudi Arabia.

That frustration has led to bad timing, bull-headiness, and calcification of opinions that is more damaging to U.S. interests than Saddam could hope to be.

Where are the environmentalists? They should be praising the war plan. If we hadn't gone in early, risking the lives of all our SOFs and regular ground forces, there would surely be many, many more oil wells on fire (causing terrible air pollution) and probably another gigantic oil spill (actually oil 'dump' would be more accurate) in the gulf. Of course, we didn't do it just for environmental reasons. A large part of it was to save money by not having to rebuild as much stuff afterward. But averting environmental disaster was surely a factor.

They could have easily waited until all the troops were in the region before moving the ground troops in. Just bomb for a month like last time.

Bush, the TRUE environmentalist.

I, more than ever, think the Bush war plan was ill conceived and poorly timed.

Well, you're certainly entitled to that opinion. I think Rumsfeld addressed this question perfectly yesterday -- he said the plan was reviewed and re-reviewed by every relevant military person at the Pentagon, and every last one of them signed off on it.

Aw, come on, what gun do you suppose he used to get the Pentagon to sign off? There have been unhappy grumblings about Rummy's war plans from day 1: not enough men; too much dependence on less than reliable hi tech equipment. Like most arrogant, self centered, self reliant beings, he blew them off.

Frankly, I would have to question whether YOUR judgment on the matter would be on the level of these people.

Yeah, you would say that. How military smart do you have to be to know that a 350 mile supply line will be hard to maintain when you don't control the land it runs through?

The quality of the war plan will be determined when the war is over. I like what I've seen -- thus far, we've taken relatively few casualties and inflicted massive casualties on the enemy -- probably tens of thousands. The name of the game is killing the enemy, and so far, we're doing a pretty good job of it.

A major element in the war plan was the assumption that the Iraqi people, particularly the Shiites, would treat us as liberators. By any measure, that has failed to materialize. The spin is that they are being forced to fight. That may be true but I have suspected from the get go this premise was not a sound one and based on faulty information.

I also had suspected that in spite of how much they hate Saddam, his Arab neighbors would still help him and now we have word that Syria, and unbelievably, Iran are sending him war supplies. You need to be paying attention......Iran? Saddam's arch enemy is helping him?

Like I've said before, the ME is like this badly dysfunctional family where Saddam is the bad of the bad, and he is hated by the rest of the family. But like with most dysfunctional families, you attack even the bad of the bad, the family will come together and support the one under attack.

And we haven't even gotten to the part I worry about the most......street to street fighting in Bagdad. Hopefully, we will put the city under seige for several months and that will do the trick.

We've lost a few in the process, no doubt will lose some more, and it is dreadful. But these fine people understood the importance of it and were willing to do what had to be done and I, for one, have the greatest respect for these kids that can be mustered. True heroes.

And hopefully, this war will be over in the next few months......but there is a lot to be concerned about.
