And who are these mythical "liberals"? Far left-wing types you mean? If so, I agree, that small minority sometimes are out of step as are far righties.

But the vast majority of Democrats I support are moderates or hybrids. The majority of Bushies are farther right than anyone imagined they would be. Therein lies a huge problem for Bush in 2004. He cannot very well move to the middle when his entire presidency has been spent on the far right. Only GOP moderates have balanced things a bit, and they are real heros for having stood up to the Bushie right.
