What you said above is probably the same rationale used by the people who supported the Vietnamese War

Protest songs about Vietnam didn't begin, in significant quantity, until LBJ had left it in a quagmire. It was then, and only then, that the protests became widespread, as they should have.

The Vietnam Hawks were incompetent liberals who hadn't a clue how to win a war. Obviously, that's not what we're dealing with here.
