Wow, mike is on the roll here, two in less than 24hrs.

BTW, Here is something for NeoCons (and Realists for that matter) to chew on. Among the Iranian opposition groups, no faction is more pro-US and with western values than the Monarchists. Possibly no group wants the overthrow of the Islamic regime more than the monarchists either. So what did Reza Pahlavi, son of the late Shah of Iran and the leader of the group answer when he was asked what help he wants from US? I am quoting from memory: "People forget that the United States achieved so much progress in so little time because it had peaceful neighbors and nobody meddled in their internal politics. The Iranian people are no less capable. We only ask that you refrain from invoking others against us or to favor one group inside the regime against others. Given that, we will establish a free government on our own". It is interesting that the viability of this plan was not questioned. Rather the fallow up question was, "then what guarantee do we have that the next regime will be better than the present one". And therein lies the crux of the problems; US policy makers have no faith.

"To say that the "peace folks" thought of Allende as a hero, ignores every piece of historical evidence. The truth is 180 degrees the other way. It was the Reaganites/NeoCons who made him a hero, because he was anti-communist. It was the "peace folks" who protested against him, year after year."
Jacob,
Are you confusing allende with pinochet? I am certainly no expert on chile but i do seem to remember a coup reportedly orchestrated against allende with the support of the CIA that brought pinochet to power. Perhaps "it was the "peace folks" who protested against him, year after year.", not against allende. Since i am no expert on chile, could you or Sun, please elucidate since you both seem to have all the answers. Mike
