But the Communists turned out to be paper-tigers!

Even Alexandre Solzhenitzin (a Russian refugee of "Gulag" fame) had publicly advised the Reagen Administration to show the USSR up by stopping wheat shipments to them.
Solzhenitzin was convinced the USSR would then soon collapse despite its much touted might. But Reagen would not listen. Why? Because he was afraid of the Red Chinese Communists. And so to him it was necessary to "buy" Soviet favor to keep the Soviets on his side in case the "Yellow Peril" aka Red Chinese Commies become too troublesome. But once again the USA was sadly mistaken: the morbidly-feared "Yellow Peril" turned out to be anything but a peril! Today, thanks to China, folks around the world can buy quality goods at affordable prices and Chinese goods help to keep inflation low in the USA. So much for US shortsightedness and stupidity.
