Far be it for me to put off anyone who wants to invest in my country but I have to say, "Be careful!" Those dividends are not cast in stone and the profits of SA mines have been hit by the strong rand. Furthermore, there is much concern and uncertainty about the new Minerals [Royalties] Bill.

miningweb.co.za [many articles, also on rand]

If only I knew. That damn rand has caused my portfolio of mainly rand hedge shares to go down by over 25%. There is blood all over the JSE on account of the strong rand. Frankly, I just can't work out why the rand is so strong and who is buying the currency. All I can presume is that it is MidEast money which formerly went into USD and the owners are frightened of confiscation if they leave it in the US or UK.
