That is the truth. When I was an undergraduate, I had many discussions with many other students from all over the world. Although I did not understand the significance of it at the time, I clearly recall speaking to several other students from Afghanistan, Columbia, China, and Korea. The literacy rate in Afghanistan at the time was one percent.

Without exception, these foreign students had "freedom" at the top of their wish list. Just that one word, "freedom". They were adamant about it; so much so that at the time it seemed almost fanatical. They all were of the opinion that the average American had no idea of the value of the freedom they enjoyed in this country. It had quite an effect on me, since at that time I opposed the Vietnam war and had never even seen someone that was not born in the United States.
