Currently, polls are stable at about 75% support, 20% opposed.

I'm not at all sure what this means. I haven't been polled since the shooting started. If I were asked straight out if I opposed or supported the war I'm not sure what I'd say. I think the war is right up there with the stupidest things this country has ever done. OTOH, I don't see where we have any choice now but to go forward, I support our troops, and I desperately want us to win. So, does that translate into support or opposition? I don't know any way of distilling my opinion into binary. And I don't know what those other people who are answering the question mean by their responses. I don't know of any data that are clear.

I wonder if it has occurred to Saddam just how stupid it would be to use chemical or biological weapons against US troops.

I would imagine that it has occurred to him that it would be stupid if he expects to survive with some power. If he reaches the point where his situation is utterly hopeless, I don't know that it would be stupid. He may find it appealing to go down with a bang rather than a wimper. The guy is nuts, after all.

Over my dead body.

Are you taking exception to the UN running the clean-up or are you objecting to framing it as a "new multilateralism?" If it's the former, I don't think there's any choice but to suck it in and do it under UN auspices. The alternative, occupying Iraq ourselves, is to validate the world suspicions that we are imperialists, which is every bit as stupid as Saddam confirming that he has WMD.
