I know two planes were scrambled from a base 60 miles south of Washington 2 minutes before the Pentagon was hit. But, that is hardly a resonable response in my opinion. Andrews air force base is within 10 miles of DC and the WTC had been struck over an hour earlier. Surely, the air force could have scrambled some jets from Andrews just as a precautionary measure when all hell was breaking lose in New York.
